Let’s cultivate solidarity from local to international through responsible consumption !
With this project, we have developed exchanges between two primary schools, four middle schools and two high schools in the Nice metropolitan area and one primary school and four middle schools in the Casamance region of Senegal on the theme of responsible consumption.
In partnership with the Senegalese association AGADA, we have set up vegetable gardens in the schools with the aim of training students in responsible production and consumption, a factor in well-being and good health (SDGs 3 and 12).
We have helped students discover the benefits of nature, by offering to get out of class to get in touch with the earth and observe the biodiversity that surrounds us and raise their awareness of fair trade and learn to garden while respecting the environment, produce quality food for good health, build confidence in young people for meaningful activities, develop collective participation to get to know each other better, curb prejudices with their Senegalese counterparts by opening up to the world!
Actions in Senegal
Thanks to funding from Sens Solidaires, the students of CEM Kénia have set up, with the help of their teacher Mr. Djiba, a 150m² vegetable garden project whose abundant production has made it possible to open a shop for the school’s teachers and staff! The products from the garden, especially papayas, are processed by the children themselves and then sold in the shop. In addition, the importance of sustainable agriculture with no use of chemical fertilizers that are bad for the water table but rather the use of compost. A great example of sustainability!
This shop is therefore a great way to introduce students to the world of entrepreneurship. The money generated by the shop’s sales is partly reinvested there, but also redistributed among the students to cover their school expenses.
Building on the success of this project, the goal is now to extend the system to other colleges in the region!
After purchasing the equipment: wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels, picks, watering cans, etc., the students were able to clean the yard of waste and mark out the flowerbeds and successfully grow lettuce, parsley, sorrel, tomatoes, peppers, bitter eggplant and okra.

Actions in France
On the Nice side, four schools in the city took part in the project. In three schools, we installed and planted planters made by the carpentry section of the Don Bosco high school with the students and eco-delegates.
Thus, the students will be able to be in direct contact with the earth, handle gardening tools, observe the biodiversity that exists in the garden. We introduced them to natural fertilizers, composting and general maintenance rules.
We also offered an escape game to allow students to discover the challenges of sustainable agriculture. and organized a fair trade stand with the students of the Les Palmiers high school, with products from the Artisan du monde store.

Intercultural meetings
In parallel with these projects on both sides, students from France and Senegal were able to meet and discuss their actions thanks to the donation of a laptop to the Ziguinchor middle school from the P@ge association.
Students were thus able to discuss their cultures, their school, food, musical, sports habits, their traditions, interculturality in the broad sense, and responsible production and consumption and to compare the experiences acquired during the school year.
Concerning primary schools, a letter correspondence was carried out between students from Nice and Ziguinchor with the aim of promoting international solidarity.
Thanks to our partners on this project.
